Ohlins TTX 22 Tech Help

OHLINS TTX22M TECH HELP

LAST UPDATE: JUNE 2021

This page list technical informations about Öhlins TTX22M rear shocks for mountain bikes. Prices listed here are only valid in Switzerland and subject to change without warning. Looking for a part that is not available online? reach us at contact@pmbswiss.ch

The basics:

  • First Öhlins TTX22M for Mountain Bike was released in 2015 and the line up got updates with new sizes and improvements ever since.
  • TTX22M are available in standard sizes as well as custom units for specific bikes.
  • TTX22M have different spring series. Springs must be chosen based on the rider (weight and level of practice) and the bike (shock length, travel, kinematics).
  • TTX22M can be mounted in different ways using mounting hardware from Öhlins or other brands; adapters are sometimes required
  • Specialized: Öhlins makes specific TTX22M Specialized frames with specific requirements; new Kenevo, Demo and Enduro from 2020+ do not require specific TTX22M units, but sometimes travel need to be adjusted to fit the frame

Öhlins TTX22M Service Intervals

Öhlins recommend service "every 50 hours of riding or once a year". Suspensions are made of dozens of parts and several fluids that have a limited lifespan and require maintenance. Skipping service will only lower performance and increase the risk of failure. To better track how much you use bike and therefore when you should get your service for your suspensions, you can use our Suspension Maintenance Schedule Template.

Understanding Öhlins TTX22M part numbers

TTX22M dampers have markings on the cylinder head and the box. Here is how to understand these:

Acronym Meaning
MTB MTB Product Line
MTBM MTB Metric Shock
AM After Market
TM Trunnion Mount
15, 16, 18, 19..

Release year

Example: 19 = 2019

Not to be mistaken with the year it was made

SBC Specialized Bike Components: made for Specialized
SBCS Specialized Unit with "S" (light) settings
SBCM Specialized Unit with "M" (medium) settings
No marking Unit was custom built or cylinder head was replaced

Springs from other brands

Cane Creek and Fox SLS (orange) springs can generally be used with Öhlins TTX22. As we do not track all the part numbers and specifications from other manufacturers, we recommend checking closely compatibility before use. Using Öhlins springs will ensure performance and compatibility.

Mounting a TTX22M

TTX22M Cylinder Heads and End Eyes

Before mounting a TTX22M it is necessary to understand what mounts the unit has at both ends. All TTX22M have a cylinder head on one side and an end eye, sometimes called "eyelet" at the other side. In some cases mounting can be direct, but in most cases you will need mounting hardware (axle and spacer kits) and sometimes reducers.

Important

  • These parts can not be sold to the general public without installation service by a Öhlins service center
  • This table does not include custom cylinder heads that have been produced for specific frames made by brands like Intense.

(1) Always require IGUS bushings (18482-01); 16mm cylinder heads eyelets and end eyes: also need 19311-01 reducer (delivered with all shocks as of 2021)
(2) Always require DU bushing (18123-01); only compatible with 16mm cylinder heads eyelets and end eyes
(3) Require Ball Joint 18124-01. Warning: most frames that requires ball joints can not switch to non-ball joint mounting hardware
(4) "5P" kits for 12.7mm axles, delivered 2 additional IGUS bushings equivalent to 18482-01; 16mm cylinder heads eyelets and end eyes need 19311-01 reducer to be compatible (delivered on all shocks as of 2021); AL = aluminium, SS = Stainless Steel
(5) "22 / 22.2" mounting hardware is both compatible with 22 and 22.2 mm wide mounting points
(6) Notes are non-exhaustive. Always refer to the Öhlins Performance Suspension Guide to check compatibility with specific models.

Require additional spacers: this type of assembly allow the use of 12.7mm mounting kits but will not allow the use of the IGUS bushing these are originally designed for, resulting in additional gap between the spacer and the shock cylinder head; closing the gap require custom spacers, additional spacers or O-rings

General Modifications and Repairs for Öhlins TTX22M

Modifications Implications Feasibility Cost (parts + service)
Change travel / Replace stop cap

Change the stop cap. Require some disassembly and a re-bleed of the shock.

Travel can only be reduced or increased by 2.5, 5 or 7.5mm, within the limitations of each shock (metric specifications).

Legacy non-metric shocks can also use metric stop caps but the change of travel will not follow legacy specifications.

For travel reduction of just 2.5mm, it is possible to use user-installable external spacers

Feasible

If a service is needed: minimum 119 CHF

Change the length and travel of a shock / Replace Shaft Assembly and/or Twin Tube

Require in most case to replace the twin tube AND the shaft, which mean a full disassembly and re-assembly of the shock + a re-bleed.

Customers should be aware that this is not always enough to adapt a shock to another frame.

Others parts that can be needed: new spring, new cylinder head, new mounting hardware, new eyelet, new stop cap.

Feasible but the availability of parts is limited

Minimum 298 CHF

If more is needed to adapt the shock to another frame then the total cost can easily jump to ~500 CHF and more, up to the cost of a brand new unit

Change the cylinder head Replace the cylinder head. Require a near full disassembly, re-assembly and re-bleed of the shock, as well as a new protective plastic sleeve. Feasible but some TTX22 units were built with custom cylinder heads and replacements can be difficult to source. From 359 CHF (standard cylinder head) to 569 CHF (custom cylinder head)
Change the eyelet

Disassembly and re-assembly of the shaft assembly. New mounting hardware might be needed.

Customers should be aware that installing a metric eyelet on a non-metric shock will slightly reduce travel.

Feasible Minimum 139 CHF
Change the spring adjuster

Near-full disassembly and re-assembly of the shock + a re-bleed.

Feasible Minimum 184 CHF
Change the valve (gold to blue valve or blue to gold valve)

Replace the valve. Require a re-bleed of the shock.

A re-valving of the main piston might be also needed.

Feasible

Minimum 159 CHF

Re-valving of the main piston Modify the main piston shim stack. Require a disassembly and re-assembly of the shock + a re-bleed. Feasible Minimum 169 CHF
